QUEZON CITY, Philippines – On Sunday night, April 10, at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, from the 40 bevy of beauties who competed in this year’s most prestigious national pageant, Binibining Pilipinas, the 24-year-old magna cum laude from the University of the Philippines College (UP) of Architecture in Diliman, Shamcey Gurrea Supsup was crowned Binibining Pilipinas-Universe and will compete in the Miss Universe competition in Sao Paulo, Brazil in September.

Supsup is a classic example of a beauty and brains in one package. She is not only backed up with her shapely figure enough to give the rest of the international beauties a difficult time in a beauty tilt, she also has a gift of gab and she was a topnotch examinee in June 2010 Architectural Board. Hers is a real combination of something to remember and to salute for.

Supsup gave a direct to the point and practical answer to the question thrown at her, ‘What worthy cause do you identify yourself with and why?’

“I think the one worthy cause I can identify myself with is valuing education. Because I believe education is something that cannot be taken away from you. You can have money, you can have fame, but in the end, it can be taken from you. But education will always be there to help you,” she said.

Standing at 5 feet and 7 ¼ inches tall and weighing at 105 lbs, she stood out and even went home with special awards: Best in Talent (where she did an impromptu sketching in less than three minutes utilizing a pencil with a smudge technique to create a softer tone of her subject), Miss Philippine Airlines, and Miss Cream Silk.

Supsup succeeded last year’s controversial and successful Binibining Pilipinas-Universe, Maria Venus Raj who finished fourth runner-up in Miss Universe 2010 in Las Vegas.

Other title holders were Dianne Necio as Binibining Pilipinas-International and Isabelle Manjon as Binibining Pilipinas-Tourism; Janine Tugonan and Mary Jean Lastimosa settled as 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up, respectively. The top 15 candidates included (in random order): Patricia Tumulak, Ma. Kristina Marasigan, Diana Arevalo, Queenierich Rehman, Sabrine Al-Tawil, Wendy Lucas, Luzelle Felipe, Kathleen Subijano, Jenn Roe Gubat, and Sarah Nicole Clenci.

ABS-CBN channel 2 televised the beauty tilt and was hosted by the hunky actor Derek Ramsey and KC Concepcion with anchors, the two other successful Binibining Pilipinas title holders: Miriam Quiambao and Precious Lara Quigaman. The station’s talents and matinee idols Sam Milby and Matteo Guidicelli serenaded the 2010 past winners.
