Manila, Philippines, August 17, 2012 — A day before the musical opened, Repertory Philippines’ (Rep) “The Wizard of Oz,” held a press preview at Greenbelt One’s Onstage Theatre with Cara Barredo as Dorothy Gale, along with James Stacey as the Scarecrow, Hans Eckstein as the Tin Man, and Oliver Usison as the Lion.

The musical was based on the classic children’s book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” featuring book and lyrics by Jim Eiler, and score by Jeanne Bargy and Eiler. None of the popular songs from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s film adaptation titled “The Wizard of Oz” (1939), starring Judy Garland, were included in this stage adaptation — it was a completely different musical presentation.

BONA: Lino Brocka’s film gets stage adaptation
By Jude Cartalaba

Manila, Philippines, August 13, 2012 — A past entry to both Metro Manila Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival, “Bona,” a critically-acclaimed work of Catalino Ortiz Brocka aka Lino Brocka (1939-1991) that gave the “superstar in Philippine entertainment industry,” Nora Aunor, her Best Actress trophy at the Gawad Urian in 1980, will soon come alive through a stage adaptation by Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) starting Friday, August 24 until Sunday, September 23 at PETA Theater Center. The stage production stars multi-award-winning theater, movie, and television actress Eugene Domingo.

Eugene Domingo plays Bona in a role that once the Philippine Superstar Nora Aunor breathed into. She is paired with Edgar Allan Guzman as Gino Sanchez. Photograph by Jory Rivera.

“It has a different take,” according to Layeta Bucoy, the stage version’s writer.

“She’s [Bona] older [more mature] and financially independent; she’s supporting her sister, who takes care of five children from five different fathers. But Bona falls for a younger guy, a contestant in a talent search, unlike the film’s Bona who willingly turned herself into a personal assistant or an alalay, and eventually became the producer of rising star Gardo.”
