Cherie Gil, Michael de Mesa lead the cast of Repertory Philippines’ 76th Theater Season


MAKATI CITY, Philippines – On a Tuesday evening, October 30, at Greenbelt One’s Onstage, Repertory Philippines, the country’s premiere English-speaking theater company unveiled to the media its lineup of productions for 2013 that would feature the kins–Cherie Gil and Michael de Mesa in two different stage presentations, respectively.

Though Gil isn’t a newcomer in Repertory Philippines, de Mesa debuts in one of the 76th season productions of the said theater company.

The theater company’s upcoming youth-oriented production titled ‘Camp Rock’ opened the affair that evening and was made even special because Anna Maria Perez de Taglé, the original Ella Pador in Disney Channel’s Original Movie ‘Camp Rock’ was in attendance. The production number was led by Markki Stroem of ABS-CBN 2 and Morisette Amon of TV 5.

In January till February 2013, the classic ’60s sex comedy hit of errors that won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play–‘Boeing Boeing’ is dubbed as the story of three Michaels. Michael de Mesa is Bernard, a playboy juggles three fiancÈes, all flight attendants, with careful planning and the reluctant assistance of his housekeeper. Michael Williams is also in the cast and Miguel Faustmann directs. Williams and de Mesa did a reading for the said play.

For the entire month of March, Michael Williams returns onstage with Carla Guevarra-Laforteza in ‘No Way to Treat a Lady’, a theatrically charged musical comedy thriller based on a bestselling novel by William Goldman. It promises to provide its audience with a devilish blend of humor, romance, and murder. Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo takes the directorial task this time.

In absence of Reb Atadero and Cherie Gil, Launchengo-Yulo and an equally talented Repertory actor, Gabs Santos read an excerpt of ‘The Graduate’, which will be staged in the entire month of April. Also in the said cast is Cara Barredo and Jaime del Mundo directs this Broadway and West End comedy smash hi, which was based on Charles Webb’s novel and the screenplay by Calder Willingham and Buck Henry. The said production is strictly for 18 years of age and above audiences.

Repertory Philippines theater season won’t be complete without its theater for the young audiences as they will be mounting ‘Alice in Wonderland’ musical. It is based on the book by Lewis Carroll. Its music by Jim Eiler and Jeanne Bargy; and lyrics by Jim Eiler as well. It will run for almost four months from August 17 till December 15, 2013. Repertory Philippines Children’s theater artistic director Joy Virata directs.

To close its season, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo and Jaime del Mundo team up to direct a big Broadway musical–‘The Producers’. This modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor will have a month-long run from November 15 till December 15. Topher Fabregas and Audie Gemora will play Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, the producers behind a Broadway flop.
