Red Turnip stages ‘Closer’ in October

A relatively new theater company named ‘Red Turnip’ will be staging an English play written by Patrick Marber titled ‘Closer’ at WHITESPACE, 2314 Chino Roces Avenue Extension, Makati City.

If in the film version, back in 2004, the romantic drama featured Julia Roberts as Anna Cameron, Jude Law as Dan Woolf, Natalie Portman as Alice Ayres or Jane Jones, and Clive Owen as Larry Gray—the Philippine stage version will bring together powerful names: Angel Aquino as Anna, Marc Abaya as Dan, Cris Villonco as Alice or Jane, and Bart Guingona as Larry.

The said play is the third play written by Marber and premiered at the Royal National Theatre’s Cottesloe Theatre in London in 1997. It earned the Evening Standard Best Comedy Award and Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play in the following year.

Marber’s play focuses on the complex relationships, politics and morality of four characters as they trade partners in search of love and lust at the same time in over the course of four-and-half years. The 12 scenes chronicle the love affairs, rivalries, seductions, and betrayals of the four leads.

Ana Abad Santos directs this densely plotted, stinging look at modern love and betrayal play of Marber. It will have its Press Night on October 3 and Gala show on October 4, respectively.
