Iya Villania, Rafa Siguion-Reyna: Grease The Musical’s Returning and Debuting Stars

After more than a decade since ‘Grease The Musical’ was last staged in Manila, 9 Works Theatrical restages this original high school musical that includes all-time favorite hits like ‘Summer Nights’, ‘We Go Together’ and ‘Greased Lightnin’’; and also features—Iya Villania and Rafa Siguion-Reyna in the cast.

Villania, a singer-actress and MYX VJ will be returning onstage to breathe into the role of the sarcastic and outspoken leader of the Pink Ladies, Betty Rizzo. She was last seen as Julia Sullivan via the theater company’s production of—‘The Wedding Singer’. Meanwhile, known for launching talents via their previous productions—the musical will also be the debut vehicle for another fresh face in the person of Siguion-Reyna as Kenickie, the tough-looking second-in-command of the T-Birds. He studied voice and acting abroad; he recently graced the latest Cosmo Bachelor batch and was a featured artist in boobtube shows like ‘Eat Bulaga’, ‘Party Pilipinas’, and ‘Kris TV’.

Other stars in the said production are TV star and stage veteran Gian Magdangal as Danny Zuko, the confident leader of the T-Birds, singer-actress Frencheska Farr as the naïve Sandra Dee-type Sandy Dumbrowski, Villania’s alterate as Betty Rizzo is a Fil-Am actor-singer-songwriter, Jennifer Blair–Bianco, and TV actress and Magic 89.9 radio host Carla Dunareanu as Marty. Joining them are some of the country’s finest theater performers—Reb Atadero as Roger, Mark Tayag as Sonny Latierri, RCS’ Vince Lim as Doody, Peachy Atilano as Frenchie, Sarah Facuri as Jan, Carlos Canlas as Johnny Casino, James Stacey as DJ Vince Fontaine, Harold Cruz as Eugene Florcyzk, Sab Jose as Patty Simcox, Angela Padilla as Miss Lynch, and Carmelle Ros as Cha-cha Digregorio.

To make this production a huge success, its executive producer is Santi Santamaria and its director is Robbie Guevara. Lorenz Martinez as the assistant director, Joseph Tolentino as the musical director for instrumentation, Sweet Plantado-Tiongson as musical director for vocals, Arnold Trinidad and Francis Matheu as choreographers, Mio Infante as scenographer (set and costume designer), John Batalla as lighting designer, Chuck Ledesma as sound designer, Myrene Santos as hair and makeup designer, Twinkle Zamora for costume execution, Leo Castillo as photographer, Tin Samson as playbill editor, and Larry Palma as graphic designer.

For over 40 years, Grease has remained one of the world’s most popular and beloved musicals. It is a 1971 musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey and named for the 1950s US working-class youth subculture known as the ‘greasers’ and set in 1959 at fictional Rydell High School, which was loosely based on William Howard Taft School. In 2011, it was staged in Chicago and in Gdynia, Poland, respectively. Also, it has its film version in 1978 directed by Randal Kleiser and produced by Paramount Pictures.

It will run November 9 to December 1 this year at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, all weekends—Galas are on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sunday at 8pm, Matinees are on Saturdays and Sundays at 330pm and 4pm.
