An Article on Two ‘Bonifacio’ Plays I wrote for ABS-CBNNews.com


To mark the 150 birth anniversary of hero Andres Bonifacio, theater groups Tanghalang Pilipino, Dulaang UP and Gantimpala Theater have all decided to stage original works on the Father of the Philippine Revolution.

Here’s what we think about the three productions.

Dulaang UP’s ‘Teatro Porvenir’

For the Bonifacio sesquicentennial, Dulaang UP chose Tim Dacanay’s play “Teatro Porvenir,” which has been staged three times before its run at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater at the University of the Philippines’ Diliman campus in Quezon City. The production is brilliant in its treatment because it did not only rely on one reference, thanks to the able professional collaboration with Floy Quintos who did the dramaturgy and additional dialogue.
