PASIG CITY, Philippines – Fresh from his Top Eight finish from last year’s ‘The Voice of the Philippines, ABS-CBN Channel 2’s singing reality search—Paolo Onesa takes pride in launching his debut album titled ‘Pop Goes Standards’ via a Bloggers’ Night on Thursday, April 10 at MCA Music, Incorporated’s headquarters at Raffles Building in Ortigas Center.
The 20-year-old Zamboangueño believes he would still be singing even if the chance to take part in the singing tilt didn’t occur in his life. Apart from the voice that is reminiscent of Michael Bublé, his mestizo looks provide him the ‘star’ factor and showcased what he’s made of by singing two songs from his album—one of which is an original written by American composers Roxanne Seeman and Daniel Nitt, then the second was ‘When I was Your Man’ by Ari Levine, Philip Martin Laurence II, Pete Gene Hernandez, and Andrew Wyatt.
Garbed in an Onesimus outfit, Onesa beamed with confidence as he answered all the questions thrown at him. He was quick to say that, at the moment—he has learned to embrace what he has right now, “I’m trying to make every moment count.”
Singing standards may not be new to him since he grew up listening to this type of music from his father’s CD collection. However, he never failed to mention that he owes part of his success to his former coach Bamboo Mañalac, who helped him find his path in singing standards. The said genre eventually led him to doing his first album with MCA Music; putting a ‘twist’ to most pop songs and turned it into his jazzy signature singing style.
Other songs featured in ‘Pop Goes Standards’ are—‘You are so Beautiful’, ‘Make You Feel My Love’, ‘Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)’ featuring his fellow ‘The Voice’ finalist—Klarisse De Guzman, ‘Marry Me’, ‘You’re Beautiful’, another original song ‘Which Way, Robert Frost’ written by Roxanne Seeman and Philipp Steinke, and also includes his two recorded songs he performed in ‘The Voice’—‘Skyfall’ (which topped in iTunes downloads back then) and ‘Elesi’.
Today, Onesa appears twice a month on ABS-CBN’s longest-running Sunday variety show, the unbeatable—ASAP 19. He will also be doing mall shows after the Holy Week on Sunday, April 27 at SM Lipa, Batangas and on Friday, May 16 at Robinsons Malolos, Bulacan, respectively. During the shows, fans can greet and meet him, have him sign his album, and have selfie shots with him.
