Al Gatmaitan, one of the country’s topnotch tenors was quietly working on a dream project to further hone his craft as a theater actor, which brings him to mounting a two-night send-off and fund-raising concert titled—‘Al Gatmaitan: In Pursuit of a Dream’ is slated on May 14 and 23, respectively.
In his desire to widen his horizons, and to further advance his studies, he passed a rigorous audition process and was selected to be part of the New York University Steinhardt School for Music and Performing Arts Professions. He will be starting this June.
Gatmaitan is a classic example of what Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy a.k.a. SARK described about as someone who continually dream dreams and make it a reality, “Life is a difficult assignment. We are fragile creatures, expected to function at high rates of speed, and asked to accomplish great and small things each day. These daily activities take enormous amounts of energy. Most things are out of our control. We are surrounded by danger, frustration, grief, and insanity, as well as love, hope, ecstasy, and wonder. Being fully human is an exercise in humility, suffering, grace, and great humor. Things and people all around us die, get broken, or are lost. There is no safety or guarantees.
“The way to accomplish the assignment of truly living is to engage freely, richly, and deeply in the living of your dreams. We are made to dream and to live those dreams.”
It was in December 2013, while he was on break for the holidays, he thought of checking online all the possible schools he could possibly apply for. Apart from New York University, he also got qualified to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, but he still chose the former.
The concerts will serve as his way of thanking, celebrating the beauty of the craft he has embraced with, and a giving back to the generosity of the Universe in conspiring to making his dreams come true. It will be collaboration with pianist Karl Estudillo, and will be directed by Will Fredo.
