The five-year-old thriving theater company—9 Works Theatrical will kick-off its fifth anniversary and season with a musical written by Jason Robert Brown titled ‘The Last Five Years’ with 2011 BroadwayWorld.com Philippines’ winner Best Leading Actress in a Musical – Nikki Gil for ‘Sweet Charity’ also from the same theater company, paired with 2013 Gawad Buhay winner Best Featured Actor in a Straight Play – Joaquin Pedro Valdes as the lead stars.
Gil will take on the role of Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress while Valdes will assume the role of Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist. The musical is described as an emotionally powerful and intimate story about two New Yorkers in their twenties who fell in and out of love over the course of their five-year marriage.
The story explores a five-year relationship between Hiatt and Wellerstein and uses a unconventional structure of storytelling in which Cathy’s story is told in backwards, opening the show at the end of their marriage; while Jamie’s is told in chronological order—starting just after the couple have first met. What is interesting about the story is that the two characters only meet once, at their wedding in the middle of the show. It is also inspired by Brown’s failed marriage to Theresa O’Neill.
Watch how Nikki tackles the opening song titled ‘Still Hurting’, which was once sang by Lea Salonga. Then there’s the controversial song ‘Shiksa Goddess’ to be sang by Joaquin; this song was originally titled as ‘I Could Be in Love with Someone Like You’, but due to O’Neill’s threatened legal action on the grounds that the story of the musical represented too closely to the woman’s relationship with Brown. However, the most anticipated song is ‘The Next Ten Minutes’.
For this musical, Brown won Drama Desk Awards for the music and the lyrics after the Off-Broadway premiere in 2002 starring Norbert Leo Butz and Sherie Rene Scott. The show has since been produced throughout the US and in countries around the world. Then a film adaptation is currently in production starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan.
Gil and Valdes seem to have a close semblance in their features with Kendrick and Jordan, too.
9 Works Theatrical’s artistic director Robbie Guevara will direct the show, which has a slated run from August 9 to 31 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Ayala Avenue, Makati City.
