If there is one musical that I do not want to miss in this lifetime–it’s ‘Shrek’, which is based from the 1990 fairy tale picture book of the same title by the late cartoonist William Steig.
It revolves around an ogre named Shrek as he tells his story to the audience about his childhood and how on his seventh birthday; he was sent out by his parents to survive and earn a living. And one day, a band of fairytale creatures including Pinocchio, The Three Bears, The Three Little Pigs, a Wicked Witch, The Big Bad Wolf, and Peter Pan among others show up on his property—the ‘Big Bright Beautiful World of his (actually a swamp); disrupting his solitary life.
That’s when his adventure starts as he eventually meets a talkative donkey. Along with the donkey, they both set to rescue a beautiful princess named Fiona, who is trapped in castle surrounded by lava and a dragon in exchange of what the diminutive Lord Farquaad promised him–the return of his swamp’s deed.
Shrek is assumed by Rycharde Everley, who has played roles in ‘Avenue Q’ and ‘Spelling Bee’, respectively. Princess Fiona is breathed by Shiela Valderama-Martinez.
Other actors in the cast are Nyoy Volante as Donkey, Jett Pangan as Lord Farquaad, Nel Gomez as Pinocchio, and Carla Guevara-Laforteza as Dragon. The song-and-dance-filled stage adaptation of the Oscar-winning DreamWorks animated film, ‘Shrek the Musical’ opens on September 19 and runs through October 12 at the Meralco Theatre.
The production’s music is by Jeanine Tesori and its book and lyrics is by David Lindsay-Abaire.
